What is Avandia?

AVANDIA is a prescription medicine used, along with diet and exercise, to treat adults with type 2 (“adultonset” or “non-insulin dependent”) diabetes mellitus (“high blood sugar”). AVANDIA helps to control high blood sugar. AVANDIA can help your body respond better to insulin made in your body. AVANDIA does not cause your body to make more insulin and it may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines.

Taking Avandia may be dangerous. The FDA has warned that AVANDIA can cause serious side effects related to heart failure and other heart problems. Specifically, the FDA warns that AVANDIA can cause your body to keep extra fluid (fluid retention), which leads to swelling (edema) and weight gain. Extra body fluid can make some heart problems worse or lead to heart failure. Heart failure means your heart does not pump blood well enough.

Yes. In fact, the FDA had enough concern over whether the increased risk of heart failure linked to Avandia is even worth it being on the market at all. The FDA initiated a long-term investigatio of the drug to further evaluate the safety risks and put together a special advisory council to recommend whether or not the drug should be pulled from the market.
