Yes. Only a person holding a valid hunting license can train dogs which hunt game birds, even during the closed period of hunting. Only a person with a valid fur harvester license can train any dog hunting any animal with fur. In addition, if you are using a firearm to train the hunting dog, then you must use shooting blanks if you are in the closed season.

What If I Hurt A Dog That Has Come Onto My Land? Is It Still A Crime?

No. Iowa has carved out several exceptions that allow you to injure an animal without it being a crime. Two important exceptions are made for the protection of your property and protection from injury. Under protection of property, a person who acts reasonably to protect their property, like a water fountain or farmland, can injure an unconfined dog that has come onto their land. Under the protection from injury, you can harm a dog if you are acting to protect someone or yourself from an unconfined dog. You should note that in both cases, the rule only applies if the dog is unconfined, or in other words, not on a leash.
