      <description>Actual economic losses, such as medical bills and loss of income, are recoverable from a defendant if a plaintiff is successful in his or her medical malpractice case.&amp;nbsp;A plaintiff may also recover up to approximately $250,000 in noneconomic damages, such as those for pain and suffering and loss of enjoyment.&amp;nbsp;The $250,000 limit is adjusted annually according to the state&amp;rsquo;s average wage.&amp;nbsp;Punitive damages are also limited to $250,000 or three times the amount of compensatory damages awarded in the case.</description>

Then the Committee will make a recommendation to the Board of Medicine.&amp;nbsp;If the Board finds that there is a &amp;ldquo;provable pattern of unfavorable practice&amp;rdquo; then the Board may impose formal disciplinary action against the doctor.&amp;nbsp;In isolated cases of misconduct, the Board may impose corrective actions such as further education on a doctor.</description>
