Request to Correct Credit Report After a Bankruptcy

Many times after a client has petitioned for bankruptcy and the debts have been discharged, the client's credit report will not correctly reflect that one or more accounts were included in the bankruptcy proceedings. The incorrect listing of these accounts can make it very difficult for your client to re-establish credit.

This form is provided as a service for attorneys who are asked by clients to send a letter to credit reporting agencies to correct errant credit reports. Complete this form for each credit reporting agency that needs to update its records.

Click here for completed sample request to correct one error on a Trans Union credit report. The error listing is not how it would appear on a credit report. The only purpose of this example is so you can see how the letter lays out and where the information you fill in would go. The requests from Experian and Equifax look very similar to the Trans Union example. Bolded items are examples of custom fields completed by the program based on your input.

To get started, select a credit reporting agency from the combo box below. Then, click "Make My Form". You will be presented with the form fields you need to complete for the credit reporting agency from where you want your client's credit report.

The following allows you to list up to six erroneous credit report entries and describe the error for each.

For each erroneous item, list the creditor, account number and details of what you are disputing.

For example, if a creditor is listing the account as a bad debt and continues to report it 30, 60, 90 and 120 days late, you would list the creditor, the account number and describe under the "Dispute" heading that the creditor is claiming that the account is a bad debt and continues to report it late, even though the account is in bankruptcy.
