Quality Legal Resources You Can Count On

Request to Correct Credit Report

Once you have your credit report in your possession, and you determine that there is one or more errors, you can use this form to request that the erroneous entries be investigated and corrected. You need to complete a separate form for each reporting agency with which you want to correspond.

Errors that are commonly disputed are balances on accounts, negative information (such as late payments) being erroneously put on the credit report and accounts not belonging to you appearing on your credit report.

Click here for completed sample request to correct one error on a Trans Union credit report. The error listing is not how it would appear on a credit report. The only purpose of this example is so you can see how the letter lays out and where the information you fill in would go. The requests from Experian and Equifax look very similar to the Trans Union example. Bolded items are examples of fields that are completed by the user and the script.

The program will automatically address the letter to the selected credit reporting agency. If you are writing from Canada, the Canadian addresses for the selected credit reporting agency will appear on the letter.

The following allows you to list up to six erroneous credit report entries, detail why the entry or entries are erroneous and tell the agency how you feel the error should be corrected.

For each item you feel is an error, list the erroneous entry exactly as you see it on the credit report you have in your possession. Then, give details on why you think it's an error. Finally, indicate how you want the error to be corrected.

For example, if the balance on an account has been paid off for a couple of months, and your credit report entry shows that you still carry a balance on the paid off account, you would list the account information exactly as you see on the credit report. Then, use the next block to explain that you no longer carry a balance for the account. Indicate when you paid the balance, and enclose a copy of the check and statement for that account or the receipt showing the zero balance along with your request to correct the credit report.
