I May Be The Father Of A Child Who Is Up For Adoption. Is There Anything That I Can Do?
A man may be a putative father if he is a child's father, but who is not married to the child's mother on or before the date that the child is born, or who has not established paternity after the child's birth. Some states have created a database which allows men who think they may be a child's father, but are not sure, to register. If the child is later put up for adoption the father will be notified and given the opportunity to establish his paternity and challenge the adoption. Check with your state's child services agency for information about putative father's rights in your state.
