Your Legal Relationship With The Family Support Division

The FSD or local child support agency does not represent either parent or the child(ren), and its attorneys are not your attorneys. Because you are not a legal client, the information you provide is not confidential under the attorney/client privilege. The information in your case may be discussed or disclosed to other public agencies that are authorized by law to receive such information, the other parent`s employer and to the other parent or his/her attorney to the extent required by law.

By law, the FSD or local child support agency has the final decision on what child support enforcement actions will be taken, even if the custodial parent disagrees. Parents have the right to seek legal advice from a private attorney or legal aid group at their own expense at any time.

The information on this page is meant to provide a general overview of the law. The laws in your state and/or city may deviate significantly from those described here. If you have specific questions related to your situation you should speak with a local attorney.
