California Civil Code Section 1950.5(b) allows a landlord to deduct the cost of cleaning necessary to put the unit back to the level of cleanliness it was in when you moved into it. A landlord is not allowed to use the deposit to pay for painting or new carpets unless there was serious damage to them by the renter.
