What are the Residency and Filing Requirements for Divorce in Iowa?

A petition for the dissolution of marriage should be filed in the district court where either party resides. (Iowa Code Section 598.2) If the respondent is not a resident of Iowa, then the petitioner must have been an Iowa resident for at least one year, taking into account any deductions for time spent out of state and residence must be established in good faith and not for the sole purpose of obtaining a divorce. (Iowa Code Section 598.5)
