Sometimes you can have overlapping protection. For example, a floral sketch might be protected under copyright law. If embossed onto tableware, patent law may also protect it. During the creation of a computer program, it is probably protected as a trade secret. When it is finished and fixed in a tangible form, it is protected under copyright law. It may also be protected under patent law if the program exists as an integral part of a manufacturing process or machine.
