What Is Child Support?

Child support is an ordered monetary amount to be paid by a noncustodial parent for the financial welfare of his/her children. Usually, the parent who pays child support is ordered to pay it once a month. The Child Support Enforcement Program was established by Title IVD of the Social Security Act in 1975. The Child Support Enforcement Program helps children obtain financial support from both parents, enables current public assistance recipients to end their reliance on welfare, and can help prevent single parents from entering public assistance.
