Cerebral palsy is a term applied to various nonprogressive motor disorders caused by brain damage occurring during pregnancy or birth. Disabilities associated with cerebral palsy include paralysis of the muscles, inability to coordinate movements, and the occurrence of involuntary movements. Most cases of cerebral palsy are caused by injury at birth from obstructed delivery, lack of oxygen, or damage from surgical instruments. Other causes may include developmental defects in the brain or other diseases. The various injuries during birth could be caused by medical malpractice and may include the failure of a doctor or hospital staff to properly perform their duties before, during or after a pregnancy or birth. If you or your baby have been injured because of improper medical care, you may have a claim against the medical providers who treated you. Statutes of limitation bar the filing of claims after a certain period of time. Consult with a qualified attorney for more information on cerebral palsy and medical malpractice.
