Cancellation of removal

If you're being deported from the US, you may be eligible for a proceeding known as Cancellation of Removal. This is the new name for what used to be known as Suspension of Deportation. To qualify, you must have lived continuously in the US for ten years prior to the beginning of your removal proceedings. You also have to prove that your spouse, parent, or child, who must be US citizens or lawful permanent residents, would suffer extreme hardship if you were to be deported. You don't qualify if you're the only one who'd experience extreme hardship. In addition, you must have demonstrated good moral character during the ten years you were here. This includes not having been convicted of any criminal activity. Four thousand cancellations are allowed each year.
