If you're being deported, the Immigration and Nationality Act provides many types of relief. One type of relief from deportation includes “asylum (uhSYElum)" or withholding of deportation." You're eligible for asylum if you have a legitimate fear of persecution when you return to your home country. This fear can be based on political opinion, religious belief, nationality, race, or membership in a particular social group. If you're granted asylum, you can apply for permanent resident status after one year. Asylum is similar to withholding of deportation with two exceptions. You can't apply for permanent residence, and it only prevents you from being deported to one particular country.
