While state laws vary, generally every driver involved in a motor vehicle accident is required to remain at the scene and give information. Failure to do so could be a criminal offense. If the accident involves injury, death, or property damage, the driver is required to notify the local police, the county sheriff's department, or the state highway patrol. The driver is required to give his or her name, address, and vehicle registration number and upon request, display a driver's license to the person struck or to the driver or any occupant of any vehicle involved in the collision. The penalties for leaving the scene of an accident depend on the extent of personal injury or property damage involved. If the driver knew or reasonably should have known that death resulted from the accident, leaving the scene of such an accident is a felony. For more information on leaving the scene of an accident, consult with an attorney.
