Fleeing or eluding a police officer

It is a crime for the operator of any vehicle to willfully refuse or fail to stop the vehicle when asked to do so by a police officer. It is also a crime if, having stopped at the request of a police officer, you then willfully flee in an attempt to elude that officer. While state laws vary, this crime is generally punishable by imprisonment in the county jail, and/or a fine. The court also has the authority to revoke your driver's license. If a person uses force to prevent or obstruct a law enforcement officer from a halt arrest or search, that person commits the separate offense of resisting arrest. If the officer's actions are unlawful, force is not an excuse unless the accused person was acting in selfdefense, that is, acting under a reasonable belief that force was necessary to protect against death or serious bodily injury. For more information on fleeing or eluding a police officer, consult with an attorney.
