One of your rights as a United States Citizen is the right to an attorney. If you can't afford an attorney, the state will provide one for you. Attorneys appointed by the state are called public defenders. They can either be fulltime employees of the public defender's office, or they can be private attorneys who are donating their time. Public defenders are qualified attorneys, but due to heavy case loads, may not be able to spend as much time on your case as a private attorney could. Consult an experienced attorney in your area for more information regarding public defense.
