Can An Employer Cut An Employees Rate Of Pay?

Reductions in pay are acceptable, but they cannot be made retroactively. The employer needs to give the employee notice and tell them from this day forward this is what the new rate of pay is going to be. Likewise, the law does not require an employer to provide pay raises.

The information on this page is meant to provide a general overview of the law. The laws in your state and/or city may deviate significantly from those described here. If you have specific questions related to your situation you should speak with a local attorney.
